Who We Are
The Briefing Room is a non-partisan initiative created by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ontario to support candidates running for municipal office across the province. As a trusted, community-focused mental health organization, CMHA works at the intersection of public wellbeing, supportive housing, and crisis intervention. We recognize that local leaders are constantly tasked with responding to complex community challenges, often without quick access to evidence-based insights. Our team combines decades of policy expertise, local branch experience, and non-partisan analysis to translate dense policy frameworks into practical insights. We do not endorse candidates, run political campaigns, or take partisan stances on local elections. Instead, we serve as an accessible, reliable resource for candidates who want to stay informed about the mental health and social issues affecting their voters. Ultimately, we are dedicated to helping build healthier, better-informed communities by serving as a helpful sounding board for local decision-makers.
Why We’re Running This Campaign
Running for municipal office means spending months answering tough questions at doorsteps about mental health, substance use, encampments, and community safety. These issues directly impact local residents, but navigating the boundaries between municipal tools and provincial responsibilities can be overwhelming during a busy campaign season. We launched The Briefing Room to bridge that gap, giving candidates clear, non-partisan context so they feel fully prepared for those hard conversations. Every weekly briefing breaks down complex topics into actionable evidence, realistic municipal policy levers, and key takeaways from the field. We believe that when local candidates have access to solid research and practical examples, the public debate becomes far more constructive and grounded. Furthermore, campaigns are demanding, and our briefings also remind candidates to protect their own wellbeing while navigating the trail. By equipping candidates with clear data and thoughtful guidance, we aim to elevate the local dialogue and ensure mental health remains a constructive focus in every community.
